Litsea cubeba is an evergreen tree or shrub belonging to the Lauraceae family. Its fruit40515354711_fb4e6f82a6_b produces Litsea—a lemon-like essential oil with a wide range of aromatic uses. Being native to East Asia, Litsea has a long history of traditional use by the indigenous people of Taiwan and has been widely distributed in Japan, Taiwan, Southern China, and Southeastern Asia. Due to its high content of geranial and neral, Litsea has many surface cleansing properties. Geranial and neral are also found in Melissa and Lemongrass and have very similar scents and properties. When diffused, Litsea can promote feelings of fresh energy to your day.

a never ended series or shocking facts

Studying International Midwifery and Maternal and Child Health feels like a never ended series or shocking facts. For today my mind has gone from Infant Mortality in Haiti at 50.9 deaths per 1,000 live births to the US with 5.6. I’ve looked at the disparities by race in the US with infant mortality with Non-Hispanic Black 11.4, American Indian/Alaskan Native 9.4, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders 7.4, Hispanic 5.0, Non-Hispanic White 4.9 and Asian 3.6 per 1,000 births. I think it’s all so hard to look at for so many people.

I’ve also learned more about gendercide in India and that it is illegal for people to seek information on the sex of their baby through ultrasound and it is illegal and doctors will be prosecuted if they provide information about sex as boy babies are more prized. The gap in boy/girl ratio is bigger in bigger cities and it is believed it is due to ultrasound and abortion being more readily available. This hurts my heart and my brain and takes my own thought down a path of how important it is to empower women and honor women and to lift women up to a place that they are looked at as important.

Then I went deeper into maternal mortality where in Haiti 349 women die per 100,000 live births and in the first 42 days after the birth. I can only imagine that this is loose statistic and not all deaths are recorded since only 37% of births are delivered with a skilled attendant present, likely not all stats are reported. Haiti has one midwife for every 50,000 people according to the United Nations Pollution Fund. In the US maternal mortality are higher that most developed countries at 28 deaths per 100,000 live births to 42 days postpartum which is on a rise and still also under reported as the data does’t even seem to be collected appropriately which makes it seem that it is likely much higher. A break down of US the maternal mortality rate is Black 47.2, American Indian/Alaskan Native 38.8, White 18.1, Hispanic 12.2, Asian and Pacific Islander 11.6 per 100,000 live births to 42 days postpartum.…/ahr_hwc_2018_re…

I have so many thoughts running through my brain. It’s also shocking how many pages I need to comb though to get information, like breaking down maternal mortality. It’s not an easy straight forward search.

All and all the world and the state of affairs for women, girls and babies is hard to take in.

It’s intersting when placed into the thoughts of midwifery. The world needs 350,000 more midwives. Midwives are the answers. Midwives can make global change and it is exhausting and ridiculous there is any disagreement about that fact.

Ignorance can be bliss, but knowledge can be power to make change. #birthstatistics
